SMTP Authentication (SMTP AUTH)

An SMTP extension (RFC 4954) requiring clients to authenticate with credentials before the server will relay their messages, preventing open relay abuse. Common mechanisms include PLAIN, LOGIN, and SCRAM-SHA-256. SMTP AUTH is typically negotiated after STARTTLS to ensure credentials are transmitted over an encrypted connection.
