An SMTP extension (RFC 4954) requiring clients to authenticate with credentials before the server will relay their messages, preventing open relay abuse. Common mechanisms include PLAIN, LOGIN, and SCRAM-SHA-256. SMTP AUTH is typically negotiated after STARTTLS to ensure credentials are transmitted over an encrypted connection.
