A secure file transfer protocol that runs over SSH on port 22, providing encryption, authentication, and file management operations in a single connection. Despite the similar name, SFTP is not related to traditional FTP — it is a completely different protocol developed as part of the SSH protocol suite. SFTP supports resumable transfers, permissions management, and symbolic link operations, making it the preferred replacement for plain FTP.
