RFC 6531 defines the SMTPUTF8 extension, which allows SMTP to handle internationalized email addresses containing non-ASCII characters encoded in UTF-8. This enables email addresses in scripts such as Arabic, Chinese, Devanagari, and Cyrillic to function as first-class email identifiers.
