PTR Record

A DNS record that maps an IP address to a domain name (reverse DNS), stored under the in-addr.arpa or ip6.arpa zones. PTR records are used for email authentication — many mail servers reject messages from IPs without a valid PTR — and for network diagnostics such as traceroute hostname resolution. They must be created by the IP address owner, typically the hosting provider.
