One of 13 root server clusters (A through M) that form the top of the DNS hierarchy and direct queries to TLD nameservers such as .com or .org. Despite being labeled 13, hundreds of physical machines host these clusters using anycast routing. Recursive resolvers are preconfigured with root server IP addresses as hints to begin the resolution process.
