A separate TCP connection used exclusively for transferring file contents and directory listings in FTP. Unlike the persistent control channel, a new data channel is opened on demand for each transfer and closed when the transfer completes. The data channel can be established in active mode (server connects to client) or passive mode (client connects to server).
